It's certainly not everyone' cup of tea, but it works for me. Since the eye is naturally drawn to the front and center of the unit, where the command stand is, that's where I put my best work. All the rank and file get a basic paint and washes to add some shading. the command stands, the special mounted figures, the flags, generals, etc. I paint my very best onto the important minis. Over the years, I've struck a compromise. It gives a good look in massed units, with only a small amount of effort. Thus, these shortcuts to achieving a reasonable level of painting.

They've been raised in an environment of 'instant gratification', and they aren't sufficiently mentored to understand that they don't NEED to paint that well to get started, and that whatever THEY like whatever level THEY reach, is just fine. To my mind, the whole bit about plastic figures and dipping is geared towards the novice painter, and especially towards the younger set who are likely just getting into the hobby. A 'milk and cookies' kind of review would have never informed me of how to get the best use out of the product from The Army Painter. I haven't even tried it yet but I'm doing some large sci-fi units and was considering trying it. I have only recently discovered the 'dipping' method of shading minis. Once the figure is completely painted and the base is flocked, only then will I spray/airbrush varnish on the model just to fix the flocking better. This avoids paint being rubbed off by holding your figure. I finish the jacket: I put varnish on it – I finish the trousers: I paint varnish on it. Since I had problems wih sprayed on varnish sometimes I now nearly always paint varnish onto my models (testor dullcoat) Most of the time I start applying yhe varnish even if my model is not yet completely finished e.g. This worked with GW varnish, Humbrol enemel varnish and Testors Dullcoat enamel varnish (my favorite) No need to strip all of the paint off your models. I found out that one can remove the frosting with an ear stick lightly dipped in the thinner that works with the medium you used (so alcohol on acrylic thinners and white spirits/turpentine on enamel based thinners) Just be patient rubbing the thinner there where the frosting occurs. I did not use the Army Painter line of products then though, so my remedy might not work with AP products. I also had frosting or silvering on some of my models in the past at some times.
